I don’t think I could make a list in perfect detail on which my favourite anime of the past season was. There were so many good ones, who in their own way managed to touch my heart and keep me hooked for more. But this was definitely high on that list, it was such a touching story that had me crying at the drop of a hat at moments, and it is incredibly rare for me to cry. There are only a few movies that can make me cry and most of them are kids movies like Brother Bear, Brave and even Lilo and Stitch. They have have those moments that are so heart wrenching that my eyes would betray me and the silent waterworks began to flow.
It was so unbelievably sad in parts that I was shedding tears and hiding my face while I tried to stop crying. And then there were the happy tears too, so many tears were shed for this anime! I think that even if I watched it again from the beginning knowing all that I know, I would still cry.
It is such a touching story that had me anxiously waiting every week to watch the next episode. It’s about change, love and friendships… about people who live in the sea, ones who live above and the love of the Sea God and his love that lived on the land. There are so many intertwining stories between all of the characters, but it is done so remarkably well that there is no confusion as to what is going on. Their stories intertwine so naturally that it just keeps you drawn in and awaiting the next part.
The story revolves around a group of children from Shioshishio the underwater village just of the coast of a small village. Hikari is our main character, along with his friends Chisaki, Kaname and Manaka. Im not even going to get into the somewhat love triangle (or would that be a sort of rectangle? Actually I have no idea what kind of shape it would end up) that they share together. But their underwater school is closed down and they must now swim to the surface and join the school that is located there. Of course there are some issues, since they aren’t overly fond of the people on the surface and vice versa. The common complaint is that they smell like fish and Hikari responds that land people smell like pigs.
Though as the series progresses things settle down and eventually some friendships are made, and new characters are introduced with some new loves brought in (even if unrequited). I’m not going to spoil this for anyone who wishes to watch it because it is best to come in clueless and let the story capture you and lead you along.
it is above all a story about falling in love and learning to deal with those feelings, even if the person you love is in love with someone else. It’s beautiful and amazing and I just have no words to describe it.
The animation is gorgeous, the detail and the views of the underwater world are superb. The music throughout the entire series is amazing. The story is so heart-wrenching and heart-warming, its twists and turns. There is no way you wont watch this more than once!
A solid 10/10, joining some others at the top of my list for best anime for the last season.
